Accreditation Delivered with BAT Project Support
January 14th, 2004

Hampson Aerospace Machining LogoHampson Aerospace Machining Birmingham achieved accreditation to International Environmental Management Standard ISO14001 by LRQA recently. The project was among the strategic business goals of Hampson Birmingham for 2003 and key to their customers including Rolls Royce.

The senior management team were concerned to ensure that a robust system was developed and embedded into ordinary responsibilities becoming part of the culture at all levels within the organisation with everyone empowered to play their part.

The company engaged industrial management consultants E9 Limited, who specialise in delivering business improvements and assisting companies through change, to develop a best practice implementation.

NAMTEC LogoThe company supplemented work on the Environmental programme joining a network activity run by The National Metals Technology Centre (NAMTEC) in partnership with E9. Through this support they were able to undertake a much broader scope of activities addressing in depth training to gain the hearts and minds of the work force, to look at supply chain management development in the environmental and wider contexts and to investigate the potential for the use of Naturally Inspired computational techniques in plant layout.

Dave Farrier, Quality Manager of Hampson Aerospace Machining Birmingham, said “We believed at the outset there was potential for us to identify significant issues that could help deliver cost down and quality improvement in the future”

“ It was important we did this properly” he continued, “and not just for the badge. A great deal of effort and time was spent in bringing people on board and communicating the need for change and proving the benefits”.

“ Involvement in the NAMTEC/E9 project has helped to shape our thinking and while we have benefited already, the future potential is even larger.” He added.

E9 offer a unique blend of skills and experience and that proved essential to implementing sustainable management systems. Key to the process was to develop involvement throughout the 140 workers on site and embed changes into the everyday jobs of the skilled workers. The training really came into its own in delivering to this objective, helping to promote openness.

John Trainor Managing Director of E9 Ltd said, “We adopted the approach of linking this new focus to familiar themes within the company and integrating the initiative back into meaningful planned business objectives. We are pleased to congratulate Hampson whose capable and committed work force will I am sure go from strength to strength”

Darren Helley project manager for NAMTEC said “This project illustrates the ways in which NAMTEC can provide direct and lasting assistance to manufacturing organisation in the metals sector.”
