Environmental certification allows Cooper and Turner to "BAT4" new business
June 2nd, 2008

Cooper and Turner logoCooper and Turner manufacture fasteners for a wide range of prestigious applications, including wind turbine generation, from their Sheffield Road site close to Tinsley Bridge. Getting into the supply chain of Vestas, the largest global wind energy generation manufacturing company has presented them with considerable customer pressure to add to the internal drivers for environmental excellence.

Management at the company set their sights on all of the benefits of ISO14001:2004 as a tool to deliver environmental excellence. Through a systematic approach to the management of its environmental aspects, the company is controlling its cost base, proactively managing its legislative compliance, creating new sales and marketing opportunities and delivering its product with a diminishing eco-footprint.

Simon Squires, Health, Safety and Environmental Manager, was tasked by the management team to introduce the new procedures and lay the ground for certification. “We approached NAMTEC when we heard that there was support for environmental projects” he explained, “They introduced E9 to us who came to review our environmental performance and assess the work required and to put that into a road map to gain certification for the site. We liked their approach and with their Evolve14k1 tools already proven in a wide range of industrial applications, it was clear that we could make the swift progress to certification that the board was demanding.”

Dr. John R. Trainor MD of E9 says “Cooper and Turner made a strong commitment to gain ISO14001:2004 from the top and had made the financial resources available. They needed experience, strategy and expert guidance to realise their objectives. We set out a 6-month work programme based on labour saving software tools, to gain certification in the timescale targeted by the board. Senior consultant at E9 Marius van der Colff worked closely with Simon Squires and between them, brought the project to a conclusion on time and budget“.

Marius van der Colff, continues, “The plan contained some challenging milestones. Each application for Evolve14k1 has its common points and those special challenges for the site. The can do approach to the project by Cooper and Turners project team made it easy to keep the momentum going. In fact it was a pleasure to work with Cooper and Turner, their commitment to problem solving is outstanding and so none of the problems encountered became barriers to successful delivery”.

Simon Squires is not resting on his laurels “Having achieved the environmental standard, I’m starting to realise there are some major opportunities to improve the way we deal with health and safety. We can push on to gain ISO18001 and can integrate the management system together using E9’s Evolve18k1 programme. That will give us a clear trading advantage and I shall be making my recommendations to the board.”
